2018 Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon 16.08.2018
A marvellous day for the 2018 Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay

ISLE OF MAN – The Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon kicked off on Sunday 12 August with a total of 375 runners completing the picturesque course.

The annual event, organised by the Isle of Man Veteran Athletes' Club and rated one of the top 10 running events in the UK, attracted runners from around the world, including participants from South Africa, Sweden, Brazil and Hong Kong. Among them was Leif Karlsson and Jan Paraniak from Sweden, who laced up for Sunday’s event and completed their 100th and 450th marathon race respectively.

Many runners tackled the course on behalf of charities, including Claire Coleman, who accomplished the half marathon wearing a rhino costume in aid of Save the Rhino International. The iconic outfit has been famously worn at the London Marathon and other international events.

Taking first place in the marathon was Paul Sykes, who raced to the finish line with a time of 2:51:33. Nhlanhla Nzama came in at second place with 3:04:24, followed by Matthew David in third (3:08:38).

Rebecca Johnson led the women’s race and finished the course in 3:12:04 to place fourth overall, followed by Angelica Kelley (3:30:30) and Kirsty Arnold (3:40:14).

The half marathon was won by Marcin Soszka (1:15:03) and Megan Thomas (1:31:37).

This year’s 4 stage marathon relay saw KUTA Atomic Blondes race to victory with a time of 3:44:02. The all-women’s team consisted of Lucy O’Toole, Melanie Schick, Jo Lannon and Claire Losh.

Sponsored by Microgaming PlayItForward, the event was also supported by a team of volunteers made up of staff who gave their time to assist with setup, provide goody bags and award medals to participants at the finish line.

The Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon forms part of No Rest for the Wicked, a series of six different races in six days on the Isle of Man.

This is our sixth year sponsoring the Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon and it has been another successful event that has grown from strength to strength. This was a particularly special year as we also had a number of colleagues running in the event and it was fantastic to cheer on all the runners alongside our wonderful team of volunteers, who did a great job supporting the day’s activities. A huge well done to the marathon committee and to everyone involved for their hard work in making this another marvellous event.

It amazes me how this event gets better year on year. It can only be down to the hard work of those individuals who plan and organise the event all year, as well as the sponsors and volunteers who help on the day. I was unable to run this year due to injury but being able to help around the course and the stadium made me realise how much effort goes into making this the brilliant event it is. Many thanks to all involved and the support from Microgaming and their team!
